Jebel Shams is a day from Muscat, or a stop after Nizwa. The highway from Muscat is paved. The last stretch toward the viewpoint is rough, and that is where a 4x4 belongs.
A normal car can stay on the paved roads. Do not add this mountain to a Salalah day. Salalah is a separate full-day highway drive.
